Hey, all! I’m seeking some help testing an application I whipped up for the Geosocial task force of the W3C Social Web Community Group. It’s called https://checkin.swf.pub/ , and it’s a barebones checkin service, similar to Swarm, but implemented as a pure Web client. You can watch the application in action.

It logs into your account on an ActivityPub server using OAuth 2.0. It then reads your inbox, filtering the activities there to only show geosocial ones. You can use the geolocation services in the browser, and the places.pub service for a place vocabulary, to find nearby places. You can then “check in” to one of the places, with a note, and control of the privacy of the activity.

Geosocial activities are part of the core Activity Vocabulary that underlies ActivityPub. But, they’re not as widely implemented as other activities in the vocabulary. This app is trying to change that, by making them available on the network, and making it easy to create them.

To test the client, your service will need to support:

• Webfinger (for login)
• ActivityPub API (“client-to-server”, “C2S”)
• FEP-d8c2 (OAuth 2.0 profile for ActivityPub API)
• proxyUrl (for fetching data from remote servers)

To test federation, your service will need to support:

• Receiving Arrive, Leave, and Travel activities
• Showing those activities to users

As of this writing, Mastodon does not work for either of these. If you want to test receiving federated messages, follow me on evan@onepage.pub . I’ve been using it a lot!

This is my second ActivityPub API client (ap, the command-line client, was my first), and my first one for the Web. I found this process really fun and invigorating. I was able to create a new kind of social networking application (well, new on the Fediverse…) purely from the client side. The app saves no data to the server; everything is done in the browser.

Today I coded something I've been dreaming about for many months - a solution to the #ActivityPub scaling problem.

The problem is that if 20 people cast 5 votes and those votes are federated to 500 servers, the instance hosting the community needs to do 20 * 5 * 500 = 50,000 network requests.

The solution is to bundle the activity up into chunks. I describe the solution and how #PieFed does it here https://peertube.wtf/w/v5aWpxjS2P4pJSn62a2AYG (probably only of interest to developers).

Mastodon's latest version has the ability to fetch missing replies from a conversation (under an experimental flag, not enabled by default).

This is a big deal, especially for smaller instances. Mastodon joins other platforms - of which I know of: Streams, GoToSocial, IceShrimp.NET and Bonfire - that pull back replies on request.

The hard work on the backend is done, and now there needs to be a discussion about how this interaction works as part of the user experience.

Das Fediverse bekommt damit Rückenwind als gemeinwohlorientierte Alternative zu Big Tech. Anerkannt wurde Mastodon von der Digital Public Goods Alliance (DPGA), einer Initiative der UN. Die Kriterien: Open Source, Datenschutz, kein Konzerninteresse. Für alle, die digital unabhängig und demokratisch kommunizieren wollen, ist das ein starkes Signal.

und genau die wollen wir aufzeigen. So einfach verständlich wie nie :).
Das ganze Gerede mit "Ach, [abwink] diese Instanzen, diese Opensource Apps, diese Anmeldungen, ach nee, nich meins" - wir Expert:innen widerlegen das fachfraulich:männlich — denn es geht eben doch einfach. Staight in your Grandma's face! (wobei die Omas, die ich kenne, besser mit solcher Technik klar kommen, als die Opas; lasst Euch auch hier von Klichés nicht einlullen!)

Gibt zudem Hands on Workshops und hast Du nicht gesehen.

Ich hab auch eine kleine Flyer-Grafik dafür gestaltet (komplett AI-frei mit Gimp und Blender!) . Vielleicht könnt Ihr die dahin weiterreichen, wo ich nicht hinkomme:

We have stopped calling what GreatApe does "live public conversations", as some people found that confusing.

We are now calling it a "Conference".

GreatApe has a concept of a 'stage' and an 'audience'. The people on the 'stage' can be seen and heard. The people in the 'audience' cannot (unless they come on the 'stage').

I updated most of the language in the GreatApe front-end to reflect that, but more to-do.

. @benyamin0 is working on fixing a UX bug — where everyone who was on the 'stage' gets kicked off of the stage if the host temporarily gets disconnected.

He is going to make it so — even if the host gets disconnected for 60 seconds, the GreatApe conference will continue.

I am working on making the WebSocket API (that @muhammadzaidali and @benyamin0 already created) look more ActivityPub / ActivityStreams like.

For example, sending ActivityPub / ActivityStreams events over the WebSocket.

Although, the WebSocket protocol needs to support a QUERY & QUERY-RESPONSE pattern, too. But, so far, the QUERY-RESPONSE has been a AP / AS `Announce` of some type of AP / AS 'Object'.

Here's to the crazy ones. The digital revolutionaries. The #fediverse builders. The ones who see social media differently.

They're not fond of #BigTech. And they have no respect for the #SurveillanceEconomy.

You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them. About the only thing you can't do is ignore them.

Because they change things.

While some see them as the crazy ones, we see genius.

Because the people crazy enough to think they can change social media, are the ones who do.

But as things are right now, Mastodon and its religiously faithful followers can and do declare Mastodon and the way things are done on and by Mastodon the one and only valid standard. They even declare anything that works differently from Mastodon broken. And they can easily get away with it.

In fact, if certain Fediverse server applications preferred compliance with actual standards to compatibility with Mastodon, it's them who'd be on the losing side whereas Mastodon, where probably over 99% of all content are from within Mastodon itself, won't lose anything. Not unless all those that are perceived as add-ons to Mastodon (Pixelfed, PeerTube, Ghost, Flipboard etc.) follow suit.

But seriously, even if Flipboard changed its ways and went for actual standards compliance even if that meant breaking compatibility with Mastodon, then Mastodon wouldn't be convinced that following standards rather than forcing its own "standards" upon everyone is the better way to go. Rather, Flipboard and Mastodon would accuse each other of being broken by design.

I'm really proud to share with you a video I made: "Introducing the Fediverse: a New Era of Social Media" https://news.elenarossini.com/fediverse-video/

In this 4-minute video I explain what the #fediverse is to people not familiar with it, mentioning some of its great features and benefits (interoperability, no ads, no surveillance...) and I set it in contrast to the world of Big Tech social platforms. I argue that, with the rise of Big Tech oligarchs and the current political climate, there has never been a better time to join the fediverse.

I hope you will enjoy this video and that you will find it useful (maybe as a tool to introduce your friends, family, colleagues, school administrators, local government officials to it).

The fediverse has truly changed my life, making me a better, more empowered digital citizen. I am endlessly grateful for it, so this is my contribution to the cause ❤️

I am also incredibly thankful for the work of @samaaberg and @patel.riyen who helped me bring my vision to life with their amazing cinematography skills and their assistance throughout the process, providing brilliant feedback to the script / edits from the POV of fedi newbies.

A reasonable ActivityPub / ActivityStreams API to schedule something to be posted in the future might be — to HTTP POST something to an account's outbox with the `published` field set to a date-time in the future.
