I think it's time to write an #introduction for this account as well!

I'm Stefano Marinelli, Barista of the illumos Cafe and the BSD Cafe. I'm a technology and open source enthusiast, a strong advocate for #OwnYourData, and against computer monoculture, even when it comes to open source solutions.

I've been active in the #Fediverse for years and am a firm believer in it. I decided to found this Cafe to bring the positive spirit of the BSD Cafe to curious and passionate users of #illumos based operating systems (#OmniOS, #SmartOS, #Tribblix, #OpenIndiana, etc.).

I'll mainly use this account for content related to this instance and illumos-based operating systems, while my account at the BSD Cafe - @stefano@bsd.cafe - remains my primary one.

Another issues, which you may have noticed, are many Fediverse sites wrongfully discriminate against Fediverse sites in Asia (Korea, Japan, etc...).

I find this ironic for many reasons.

The one I am currently on (this one) is in Europe, but one of the reasons I have had more than one account, and why many of the 3rd party Fediverse Apps allow you to sign in to multiple accounts, is to overcome that fragmentation. The Fediverse most certainly does have a fragmentation issue.

If you're looking to join the Fediverse. And presuming you are one of the people who do not want to promote hate speech (not all of 4Chan is bad), I would recommend an Asian site, since freedom of speech is more respected and valued. Perhaps more Asian sites allow it because it's not exactly widespread in offline (in the real world).

There are some good European sites (this being one of them). But know that most Asian sites will be more relaxed.

This will be the — you know what? I've lost track of how many times I've been "featured" on 4chan.

Unfortunately, the mass wave of people opening tickets claiming I should add the chan to this list, triggered the anti-spam feature. You're all a very enthusiastic bunch, as always. 😂 That said, 4Chan is not part of the Fediverse and the domain name extension is American, and so would qualify for my list. 🤷

But I did want to address one of the tickets, since it does underline some of the issues among the Fediverse. 😉

The Fediverse has a lot of fragmentation. This is often caused by admins who should not be administrators. An admin will get into a disagreement with 1 person, 1x and choose to block not just that individual, but the whole site and all their users. So if you have 5,000 people on site "1A" and 5,000 on site "2B", you have 10,000 people who cannot communicate with one another, and are clueless this has taken place.

A screenshot of an email that reads: I've been using the Fediverse features of this project, and I've encountered some inconsistencies that are really frustrating. Specifically, when trying to interact with instances outside the United States, the responses are often delayed or even fail altogether. Furthermore, it seems that some features like cross-platform mentions and notifications don't work reliably. For example, I'll get notifications for messages sent on platforms A and B, but nothing from C, even if I can see the messages directly on C. I've tried testing this with multiple accounts and instances, but the issues persist. It's extremely annoying because I need to rely on consistent interaction across all platforms. Could you please prioritize looking into this? It shouldn't be this complicated to stay connected across the Fediverse. Thanks.

I'm following almost 2000 accounts and while my feed is very much alive and buzzing, it feels like it doesn't really match my interests. It's too generic.

I need to weed out what I actually care about. Is there anything that can help with that?

Does anyone have #fediverse or #mastodon stats (preferably from a few different servers) about numbers of bad-faith actors being identified, banned, etc.? I've become pretty interested in this from a methodological point of view. I'm thinking of running some #moderation simulations to explore possibilities in a "calculate some stuff and make some graphs" way. Actually, if someone already did that, I'd be keen to read it.

I'm interested in how to detect "bad eggs," realizing as I think about it that I don't even know all the questions to ask, and this entire line of investigation has some thorny issues I'll need to deal with. I think infosec.exchange might, in some ways, be the perfect server to be on for this, because I am pretty sure that #cybersecurity has huge overlap with this whole domain.

This is a photograph of the hugely-missed author Terry Pratchett. He is an older white man, with a trimmed white beard and glasses. He is (as was customary for him) wearing a black hat and on top of the hat there are two starlings. Terry is laughing. Now the whole point about the footnotes and Alt Text is that both of them allow the author to go off at a wild tangent from the original point being made. Pratchett made extensive use of them throughout his writing. A good example would be a discussion about why there might be starlings on his hat, and if that's what he's laughing. I'll assume it is -- after all, who wouldn't want to laugh if their hat had starlings on it -- but it could be anything. Maybe he's giggling at a remembered reference from one of the footnotes in his own books.

Expectation: A set of #Fediverse platforms where people engage in debating and talking around a given subject or hyperlink, actions of which imply a quite continuous flow of user-written texts, back and forth among the peers, especially when there's some kind of disagreement.

Reality: texts are there for virtue signaling and circlejerking around the allowed principles of the hive mind, and god forbid someone disagrees with any of said principles by bringing a well-elaborated text containing nuanced takes... People are too lazy to try and argue (and, by extension, promoting debate) so they treat the down arrow as if it were some kind of well-elaborated argument to the matter they're disagreeing with. Then they blame LLMs for taking over the means of human textual production, when themselves are giving away the ability of textual production on a silver plate.

I had several nice and interesting debates and exchanges on #Lemmy (and #threadiverse in general), but, oh, my Goddess, many Lemmy (actually, it's the entire Web) people really suck sometimes due to this lazy behavior of using numeric reactions instead of using the fucking keyboard they got in front of them.
