Do not trust mastodon.social.

They know about the scams I reported, but they do nothing. Even worse, they still support some of them — for example, “Gaza Verified.”

We joined the Fediverse to get away from one group controlling everything. But now, because so many people depend on mastodon.social, it is becoming that same kind of gatekeeper.

I've realized that I get ... disoriented (?) when reading toot threads. Each toot starting with the replied to username is not really useful.

I think when a Posted toot is rendered replied to usernames could simply by pushed to the bottom of the toot, or somehow hidden away.

Anyone else got thoughts about this?

Now I feel bad for being too busy, falling behind, and not managing to upgrade to 4.6.0 alpha. I'll definitely get to it over the upcoming weekend. It might need more work than usual since there will finally be CSS custom properties, and I want to migrate Mastodon Bird UI to use them.

The BSD Cafe instances have just been updated to Mastodon v4.5.0.

There was a bit of a slowdown as the secondary instance went smoothly (but it's underpowered), while the primary one took longer because I had to update Node.
But we're there!

Among the main new features: quote posts and other things, like the remote fetching of replies - which I had, however, already enabled on v4.4.x in recent weeks.

While we have the common dd, x or d{motion} like dap to delete a paragraph or daw to delete a word, there are less known ones.

When you do a 'd' like 'dap' to delete a paragraph, Vim copies it in the _yank_ register, overwriting what you have copied before.

To avoid that, use the "black hole register":

All looking pretty healthy, stable, realiable. Running like a well oiled machine 🙂

The delete all dead jobs from the SideKiq morgue is missing in v4.5-beta.2 Mastodon. Anyone know how to tweak it and get that link back? #MastoAdmin I'm gonna poke around and see if it is a custom webUI change. Curious if there was a reason to remove it, also. #Mastodon

Moderation. It’s a roller coaster.

Today, a (literal) nazi opened an account and began harassing people. We received ~80 reports within minutes. That may be a record.

We suspended the account, of course. But not before a lot of people yelled at us. For the record, this is not preventable when registration is open. We can only react. So be nice.

My gratitude and love for the person behind this report. It made me chuckle. 🫶🏻

Mastodon users, you might want to check out the "timed mute" option, it's really useful! It lets you set a period (6 hours to 30 days) when an account is muted. It's handy for taking a break from someone.

To make a timed mute, you'll need to be using the website, web app or some third party apps. Mute as usual but before confirming the mute click "show options" and select a time period.

If you want to still get notifications from them, untick the "hide notifications" box.
