I am passing the torch to @mellifluousbox, who will be the new Executive Director. Felix has been involved with #Mastodon since 2020 and has been instrumental in evolving the organization, raising funds, and growing the team to get us to where we are now. With @haubles and @renchap by his side, and the team we have assembled over the years, I have faith that the new leadership will do a stellar job.

Everything in your main "Home" timeline on Mastodon is there for one of these reasons:

-An account you follow posted it
-An account you follow boosted it
-The post contains a hashtag you follow
-An account you follow replied to an account you also follow
-An account you follow replied to itself

Nothing else gets in your main feed, it's just these things.

If hashtags are at the end of a post they are displayed in a smaller font below the post, which some people miss.

@FediTips I believe that there is another case, which is somewhat a special case of the third point: the post *contained* a hashtag you follow, but was later edited so it no longer does.

The initial hashtag pushed the post into your home feed, but the later edit does not *remove* the post from your home feed.

If people abuse this, block them. 🙂

Today I am stepping down from my role as the CEO of #Mastodon. Though this has been in the works for a while, I can't say I've fully processed how I feel about it. There is a bittersweet part to it, and I think I will miss it, but it also felt necessary. It feels like a goodbye, but it isn't—I intend to stay on and continue to advise the new leadership and contribute, because Mastodon—and the fediverse—is one of the very few beacons of hope for a better web.

Praktisch alle können durch Upgrade auf #Linux noch jahrelang gute Dienste leisten und so der Umwelt Millionen Tonnen von Elektroschrott ersparen.

Linux und die dafür existierende Open-Source-Software können Windows / MS-Office mehr als nur ersetzen - und der Umstieg ist gar nicht schwer, schon gar nicht mit kostenloser fachkundiger Hilfe ehrenamtlicher Helfer*innen bei der #vhs #Karlsruhe.

Found on a @delta app that I'm not fully understanding how it works.

Still, spot on definition of the fedi. Which is also pretty much both is strength and weakness. You don't need to REACH the world, you just need to find your people. For mass advertising messages go to commercial social media and pester them there with random angry people, for a sense of worldwide close-knit neighbourhood where people matter, and you know each one by name: stay.

It now has an additional step where you switch off email notifications for new followers on the account you're moving to.

Apparently some people have been receiving lots of email notifications for new followers when they've transferred followers over. For some reason no one has raised this issue before, but it seems to have happened to a number of people.

O Mastodon é um acumulador compulsivo e acabo de remover 50 GB em mídias, a maioria do cache do fediverso.

Também já cheguei a quebrar o servidor no início porque não sobrava espaço no disco.

Como apagar mídias do cache que sejam mais velhas que 3 dias:

tootctl media remove --days 3
```

Como apagar mídias, incluindo cabeçalhos e avatares:

tootctl media remove --days 3 --prune-profiles true
```

Os dois acima são para perfis sem relacionamentos com seus usuários (seguidor/seguido). Só gente aleatória que passou pela linha federada.

Como apagar imagens de miniaturas de links:

```
tootctl preview_cards remove --days 15
```

Não usem menos de 15 dias pois é o tempo que o Mastodon demora para gerar elas de novo.

Como apagar toots de usuários remotos que não interagiram com os seus:

```
tootctl statuses remove
```

Apagar mídias órfãs de posts apagados por seus usuários:

```
tootctl media remove-orphans
```

Limpar o cache do Mastodon:

```
tootctl cache clear
```

Bem que o Mastodon poderia incluir isso tudo e permitir configurar pelo painel de administração, como já permite para algumas coisas no menu Configurações do Servidor > Retenção de conteúdo.

Essa é uma funcionalidade que poderia ser até mais destacada, pois já tentei fazer o mesmo em outro servidor que também suporta Markdown (Akkoma/Mangane), sem sucesso.

SNAC é um servidor ActivityPub extremamente minimalista e, por isso, bem peculiar, porém apresenta algumas funções únicas, como essa. Ele não é ideal para quem quer utilizá-lo majoritariamente com aplicativos clientes feitos para a API #Mastodon, pois seu funcionamento é bem distinto daquele mais comum e não tem o compromisso de apresentar as mesmas soluções para as mesmas funcionalidades. Mesmo assim, há casos em que se adequa muito bem. Se não faz questão de ficar o tempo todo interagindo com a Federação ActivityPub ou, por exemplo, se pretende criar um perfil para publicação automatizada por algum na máquina em que ele está rodando, isso fica muito fácil, pois já possui tudo que precisa no comando, além de ser pouco exigente em requisitos de memória e processamento. Pode ser compilado em praticamente qualquer plataforma POSIX e seus arquivos ficam numa árvore única de diretórios, tornando a transferência para outra máquina relativamente bem simples. Sua interface na Web é simples para quem utiliza e também para quem lê, ao sequer exigir a execução de JavaScript. Apenas HTML e CSS.

Como analista de tecnologia da informação, especulando sobre o ciclo de vida dos sistemas, considero provável que, por ter mínimas dependências, SNAC demore bem mais que outros servidores mais complexos para se inviabilizar ou precisar sofrer reescritas drásticas, desde que se forme uma comunidade maior que o mantenha ativo se porventura faltar seu criador.

I’ve been having video conversations over Signal with people from Gaza who have Mastodon accounts on the fediverse in an effort to vouch for their authenticity.

This week, I whipped up a site to formalise this and to enable them to add a verified link to their Mastodon bios. Hopefully this will cut down on the amount of time they need to spend proving that their accounts genuinely belong to a person suffering through genocide and famine in Gaza and help them with their fundraisers.
