@dch honestly, don't spend time on it, but (again) thanks.
Focusing on cat pictures, instead of bug reporting, is positively fulfilling. Surprises around so many corners. Avenues such as this:

💚 Mastodon
Dear friends of the BSD Cafe,
As 2024 comes to an end, it’s time to reflect on what we’ve built together during the first full year of life for BSD Cafe. Launched on 20 July 2023, this project has grown far beyond what I could have imagined. While I haven’t tracked full uptime data, I can confidently say that the downtime was less than 30 minutes overall - even though the main VM hosting our services moved multiple times (including a switch from a Proxmox hypervisor to bhyve on FreeBSD, for the sake of alignment with our mission). In a world filled with over-engineered HA systems, we’ve outperformed many “big-name” cloud providers. Not bad for a community project, right?
For me, this has been an incredible journey. The users here are not just participants - they’re collaborators, and their positivity has been inspiring. The content shared and created at BSD Cafe has been valuable not only to the BSD community but beyond. What truly sets BSD Cafe apart is the openness for dialogue and exchange. Whether it’s social media posts, Matrix discussions, repositories in our brew, or RSS feeds, people seem to genuinely appreciate what we create and the conversations we foster.
BSD Cafe is a journey - one that grows, evolves, and continues. Our goal isn’t endless growth (we’re a community, not a business) but rather to maintain a welcoming, inclusive space where everyone feels a sense of positivity and belonging. For me, opening any service with “bsd.cafe” in the domain brings joy and pride. That’s the spirit I’ve tried to convey, and I hope it resonates with all of you, whether you’re active BSD Cafe users or friends of the community.
Promoting self-hosting and #OwnYourData has, as a side effect, inspired some users to “go solo” with their own setups. But even then, they remain part of BSD Cafe - in spirit, in purpose, and in connection.
Here’s a look at what we’ve achieved together this year:
- mastodon.bsd.cafe: 370 total users
Active in the past month: 207
Active in the past six months: 286
- snac.bsd.cafe: 14 total users
Active in the past month: 7
- blendit.bsd.cafe: 61 registered users
- matrix.bsd.cafe: 23 users
- brew.bsd.cafe: 29 users - 80 repositories
- freshrss.bsd.cafe: 25 users
- miniflux.bsd.cafe: 11 users
- press.bsd.cafe: 9 users
- myip.bsd.cafe: Constantly used by various users
- wiki.bsd.cafe: Could use a bit more love and content, but it fulfills its role as a functional homepage.
- tube.bsd.cafe: Still in testing - Peertube 7.0 update is on the way.
For detailed stats from our reverse proxy and general router (excluding media services, which generate most traffic but are handled via caching reverse proxies), you can check here - updated hourly: https://netstats.bsd.cafe
The journey of BSD Cafe continues, and I look forward to seeing where 2025 will take us. Together, we’ve built something special - something driven by passion, shared purpose, and a little bit of the BSD magic that makes all of this possible.
Here’s to a new year full of joy, serenity, and connection. Thank you for being part of this adventure.
Wishing you all a fantastic 2025 - and THANK YOU!
Stefano

Periodic reminder that you can follow hashtags on #Mastodon (and presumably most other #Fediverse-related software). You can even add them to lists if you follow @tag-[desired hashtag]@relay.fedi.buzz .
I finally had to remove @tag-catsofmastodon from my "Funny" list out of fear of everyone unfollowing me for boosting so many damned cat pics. And because it was crowding out everything else. Lol
@skinnylatte my morning so far:
1/ review a Reddit post that I made yesterday, partly about AI
2/ take a break from technology = cat photos, of course
3/ after seeing the boost by @LibertyForward1 I boost https://hachyderm.io/@skinnylatte/115393400651292706 = the perfect first cat photo of the day
4/ wonder who has such an interesting cat, so first click = the profile
5/ three clicks later = https://news.publicsectorai.tech/archive/public-sector-ai-try-ai-in-the-public-interest/
6/ back to AI, nicely.
This morning, I love Mastodon. Oh, I nearly forgot:
7/ still looking at that cat.
Of course.
Anyone notice on #Mastodon v4.5.0-beta.1, when browsing a hashtag timeline, when new posts come in it immediately takes you to the top post in the timeline instead of letting you continue browsing? You can be 5 scrolls down or 1 scroll down, it doesn't matter. When a new post comes in you are popped right back up to the top.
This even happens in slow mode. #MastoAdmin #MastoDev
Do you have a GitHub account?
One of the conversations at #FediForum revolved around accessibility for non-techies in the Open Social Web. One of the barriers raised was the reliance on spaces built for developers, such as GitHub. So, we're wondering, how many people on the Fediverse have a GitHub account?
Please boost so more people can interact!

BSD Cafe Mastodon instances: I've enabled the FETCH_REPLIES_ENABLED - as it's already available on v4.4.x
You should be able to see entire threads, improving the entire experience.
I've enabled a slightly more aggressive caching on the BSD Cafe Mastodon instance. It shouldn't be necessary, but I want to see how things change.
If you notice any issues, please let me know.

Was KI und was Kunst ist, bestimmen heute die Moderatoren. Kunstfreiheit am Arsch.
Mastodon.Social schämt Euch, mit einer der Gründe, dass die Menschen hier nicht auf der Plattform ankommen, oder hat da etwas die KI bei Euch moderiert??

Richtig traurig was da abgeht. #Mastodon.Social ist kein sicherer Hafen...
Genuine question: What's the BSky Infosec/Cybersecurity community like over there?
I know at least some people made the "jump" and decided to go all in BSky, and some remained active on both.
But what's it like now? Someone there on the inside, active or not?
The #Mastodon 4.5.0 will introduce some interesting new features. The one I've been waiting for a long time is the Automated fetching of remote replies.
This will make the experience much smoother, especially for smaller instances.
As usual, I'm not going to upgrade until this will be released.

Schön, dass @Larvitz die Updates immer so schnell einspielt 👍
Ich durfte die neue Fetching-Funktion eben schon live erleben – echt cool!

Now running Mastodon v4.5-beta1 on our instance burningboard.net. This release allows for example to quote toots.
Also updated Ruby to version 3.4.7 🙂
All looking perfectly stable from the engine room !
if there was mitra with the entire feature set of mastodon it would be crazy. Mitra is way easier to setup, maintain and configure and mastodon has a great ui, moderation and administation through a webui. Mitra's ui is very limited, theyer implementations of relays is stupid and it doesnt have object storage. Mastodon doesnt allow you to change the default message lenght without breaking the update system, has way higher resource usage and the setup for nginx is just a big ball of jank. Combining mastodon and mitra would make the ultime activitypub server.
Good morning, world!
The day started with a report, a suspended user, and an undelivered email because the mailbox doesn’t exist.
Not exactly the best way to start the morning - but that’s part of running a Fediverse instance. ☕️
@shmok #Nostr is just a Bitcoin spamming platform where you can't find any relevant information. It has never been a genuine, trustworthy, and reliable network, and it never will be.
All relevant information/contributions come from other networks such as the #Fediverse, especially #Mastodon.
Prove me wrong!
A while ago, I noticed that the media storage of my Mastodon server was close to using up my entire hard drive on this server, so I started running tootctl media remove --days=7
in a daily cron job.
I thought, naively, that the deleted media would be re-fetched the next time I viewed it. But it seems like posts with deleted media are just permanently broken; even my own boosts from over a week ago have broken images now.
Is there any way to fix this? Or are my local copies of those posts broken for good?
#Loops has entered #beta with #ActivityPub support, allowing users to connect with creators across the #fediverse. This means users can follow and interact with creators on platforms like #Mastodon and #Pixelfed, and vice versa. Loops has implemented several technical features to ensure smooth federation, including a shared inbox, HTTP signatures, and smart content representation. https://blog.joinloops.org/loops-joins-the-fediverse/?Fedizen.EU #Fedizen #Fediverse #ActivityPub #News

Please tell me there's a way!

🐘 Add Our Relay!
If you are an operator of another #Mastodon / #fediverse #social instance, please consider adding PrivacySafe.Social to your list of relays.
Just navigate to "Administration" > "Relays" > "Add new relay", paste in https://relay.fedi.buzz/instance/privacysafe.social , and click "Save and enable"
This service provided by fedi.buzz makes sure public posts from our users reach your #federated timeline. More about us 👉 https://privacysafe.soclal/about

Ok, so it's been awhile, but I have a serious question to my follows.
What's the best in current "tiny but public" Mastodon servers, because I'm wondering if there's a better solution for interacting with the Fedi vs then a stack that goes "NOM" resources with regularity.
I'd also like a platform that doesn't have to such complicated functionality as quotes be something that exist in a side branch for years.
My relay at https://fedi-relay.gyptazy.com has currently 139 instances connected, mostly tech related sharing the same mindset and interests like #Linux, #BSD, #Ansible, #Proxmox, #Coding, and many more! You can easily join from your instance when using #Pleroma, #snac (#snac2), #Mastodon and its forks 🙂
#fedi #fediworld #fedicommunity #community #FreeBSD #OpenBSD #NetBSD #homelab #Python #Debian #RockyLinux #Feditips

This is akin to Linux model. I think it’s good development.

Announcing Gaza Verified
I’ve been having video conversations over Signal with people from Gaza who have Mastodon accounts on the fediverse in an effort to vouch for their authenticity.
This week, I whipped up a site to formalise this and to enable them to add a verified link to their Mastodon bios. Hopefully this will cut down on the amount of time they need to spend proving that their accounts genuinely belong to a person suffering through genocide and famine in Gaza and help them with their fundraisers.
The first four accounts belong to:
• @Aseelsehwel
• @NouranKhaledGh
• @joynewacc
• @mohshbair
If you want to get on the site, please contact me. See the guide for more information: https://gaza-verified.org/guide
Please share and donate to their fundraisers if you can.
Thank you!
