Had to stay for two days, earlier this week, in a house where someone had smoked for 40 years. 3 days later I'm still suffering from the effects. My lungs are not up for running and the watch is telling me I got low blood oxygen.

A massive mile stone today, I reached the halfway point. Who would have thought that I would get to this point let alone continue to run for nearly 9 months.

Why do I run? Mainly because I want to be able to other stuff, not because I love it it.

I've been thinking if I should be an all year runner I might need to invest in some leggings. But why is leggings in the Ford T category, any colour you want as long as it's black. Especially if you look for male running leggings. Can we get some colours, please, or designs that's not fire, flames and go faster stripes. How does female leggings fit a male, because I would wear a design like these. Why is it that male leggings are black, is it for the same reason female trousers doesn't have pockets?

Today's run, trying to set a mile record a beach in St Andrews, Ha! Had to be postponed, because I was protecting Doctor Who with drop kicking monsters away, in my dream.

The wall bore the brunt of this kick and resulted in a rather painful big toe. Walking the mutts is slow, hoppled and not comfortable at all.

So I had to go and get some "painkillers" from the excellent baking baked goods bakery, that is Fisher & Donaldson, in form of their every so nommy cream filled fudge doughnuts, burp.

Taking two days off after protecting Doctor Who with drop kicking monsters. Clearly is the best preparation for a PB. Over 3 min faster on the 5K, tailwind on half of it and pan flat helped a bit too.

It came as a bit of a surprise too, looked at the watch and said numbers I've never seen before 4.2K and 28'ish min. It normally shows ~40min at the same distance and much much more up than today's 4m.

Not much running of late, weather vs work vs admin put a spanner into the works. But today was just a small short run, even if planned route was a no go. Because new running partner had hurt his paw in the dog pound were we got from two weeks ago. So we are taking it easy, also he is still too young for longer runs.

Hit a massive milestone today. Never in a million years would I have thought this was possible. I, who always thought that running was only to get first in the ice cream queue, started to run on a regularly basis and not after ice cream vans.

I know, crazy and for yet to be determined reasons, I also came up with the idea of running a thousand miles in one year, and that was dreamt up without the help of alcohol too. Just how and why did I do that, I dunno, I clearly need to have a talk with myself over a stiff drink or two, to come to the bottom of this sillyness.

Yet, it clearly did help, because I have now run just over a thousand kilometers, 1000km, a million meters, in under 10 months.

I know it's not 1000 miles but it's a fecking milestone still, especially when I've always been wary about my knees and lower back when doing dumb things, like sportsball in the park after a few pints. Heck even when cycling.

Don't think I'll get to the original target but I'm well and truly chuffed that I did this, yes there was walking up the hills and still is. But I now know that I can run 10 miles without needing a lift.

Like a ultra runner I saw on a video/podcast said - totally plagiarizing his words here - I (he didn't really like running) run because I want to be able to do other things (e.g. be able to go on a hike camping trip without being bollocksed afterwards).

I run, so I can walk my dogs, get up hills and eat cake without worrying about it.

Does this make me a runner?

A positive side effect from DNFing at 103km and slowing down during the last 15km to not miss any turns in the forest when I couldn’t see any course markings anymore: my legs and body feel quite good this morning. Almost too good 🤔😅. Not complaining and nice pay off from all the training.

So yeah a DNF. But I am not sad. It was out of my control. And eyes/vision is not something to take easy.

Even if I would have continued I would just have delayed the DNF. The end of the race includes some technical parts that require vision.

Federico Hernandez »
@recollir@mountains.social

So when I DNFed at km 103 I got the help of two runners to contact the race office and explain them where I should be picked up. They stayed for 15 min with me to see that I would be fine before continuing with their own race.

Federico Hernandez »
@recollir@mountains.social

I sm fine now. Vision is almost at 100% again. Medic’s recommended a warm humid environment to clean up the eye. So I created a steam bath in the bathroom. That helped almost immediately to regain some vision. Apart from not being able to see the course markings I could not even identify things on the phone.

Federico Hernandez »
@recollir@mountains.social

Now I can use phone again for a longer period. So why did I DNF?

Nothing running related. Body was feeling great, I was enjoying myself. Despite my 4 tumbles on Kullaberget 🙈.

It was due to blurred vision that became almost no vision. Read on.

It started at km 83. At km 88 I changed my lenses at the aid station to see if the situation would improve. And continued around km 95 my vision was almost gone. I didn’t see the course markings any more. But the shadow of runners. I could not see characters on the watch or phone. I continued walking to km 103 to be able to be picked up at a road and not have to wait in the forest.

I’m was not the only one affected today. There were more DNFs due to blurred and lost vision. Runners with lenses and without lenses. One eye or both.

The theory from the medics is that the strong wind (gale/storm level) put a lot of salty sea water in the air that caused an acute inflammation for some.

DNF after 103km. Will write later about it. It is not the “running body” that caused the DNF. Something else that made it not really smart to continue as it affected the running indirectly. Such is live.

Look who I found in a sports hall in Sweden - @moelholm.

Federico Hernandez »
@recollir@mountains.social

Kullamannen stats for you @mathias : 100K and 100M races have 800 runners each. The 50K race 700 (don’t know about the 20K one). Interesting is that for the 100K and 50K one half of the runners are from abroad/living outside of Sweden. For the 100M it is 30% foreign runners. So (leaving out the 20K race) 2300 runners signed up for 50K, 100K and 100M. And 1000 of those are from abroad and chose to experience the Swedish darkness and weather misery… 🤔😂

Instead of a shakeout run - first a pizza in the center of Båstad, then a good beer at the hotel bar. Double carb loading. 💪 Finish line in front of our hotel in Båstad. Hm, our room this year is 36 steps further away from the finish than the room we had last year. On the edge of this being too long. 😜 The no shakeout run means also a break of my streak. 315 days. And I am not even sad about it. Pizza and beer was definitely a better choice.

Don’t sign up for races I will be in… Continuing my track record from prev adventures in the year. At least it is not raining this time. Friday night we will be “gone with the wind”. 😜 Saturday there will be a temp drop. On race day only. 😅

But this is part of the race. That’s why we are there. And it makes it the outcome unpredictable (some years ago the DNF was 70% because of weather).
